Student researchers and AP physics students had the chance to tour the Louisiana Accelerator Center, a particle accelerator. They learned how particles can be sped up with magnets and strategically shot like an atomic cannonball at various materials and biological tissues, as well as the significance of this type of research. Dr. Karl Hasenstein of the Biology Department and Dr. Gabriela Petculescu of the Physics Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette gave the students a detailed tour of the facility. Thanks to teachers Andy LeGoullon and Brittany Grissom for accompanying students (left to right) Grace Pellegrin, Siyeon Joo, Curtis Hidalgo, Owen Broussard, and Jacques Gachassin, on this rare field trip opportunity!
