Ms. Jenny Melanson, '03

Math and history teacher Jenny Melanson has experienced ESA in so many ways. A native of Crowley, she graduated from ESA in 2003, and has been teaching here for 13 years. She’s also an ESA parent; her daughter Clementine is a second grader. This year, her 18th as an educator, Ms. Melanson is teaching eighth-grade history, Algebra I, and Intro to Algebra. She says the students are what she loves most about ESA. Here’s our Q&A with Ms. Melanson:

How do you teach habits of scholarship and honor to your students?

My eighth-grade history course focuses extensively on student skills and on thinking more abstractly and less concretely.

What is your favorite project, unit, assignment or routine that you have created in your curriculum?

Anything that involves student research

What do you do outside of ESA that is part of who you are, feeds you joy, gives you purpose, or rejuvenates your soul?

Growing up and attending ESA, my life always felt divided: half in Crowley and half in Cade. One of the joys of teaching at ESA has been creating a seamlessness between my time on and off campus. Walks around Cade in the morning inspire my needlework; I am a member of the Louisiana Craft Guild and sell my embroidery at Sans Souci Gallery. Many of those pieces spring directly from the plant and animal life on campus. Likewise, I am often grading student papers or knitting student hats in my time at home or while traveling. I love that I enjoy both my work with students and my work with fiber enough to blend the two each day.

If you had a year to study anything in the world, what would you be passionate about learning at this time in your life?

Well, I just finished a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and have been brushing up on my math skills; I’m finding algebra and calculus significantly easier to remember than geometry and trigonometry. However, if I had a year to study anything in the world anywhere in the world, I would attend the Royal School of Needlework in Britain and refine my embroidery techniques.

What would you tell a new parent or prospective parent about ESA?

ESA will love your child. The adults here will see your child as a person, not a number or a cog. We will know your child’s joys and strengths, and we will challenge your child in a way that grows the confidence every person needs to thrive in the wider world.

Thanks, Ms. Melanson!
