Q&A with Claire Garber, '23, about getting her hands dirty on the Cade Campus this summer.
What was your project and what inspired you to take it on?
My project consisted of cleaning out the sugar kettle and small artificial pond on campus. I spent five days in the beginning of June decluttering and re-beautifying the campus's natural features. I wanted to do this project because of my interest in botany and especially aquatic gardens. I noticed extensive rust in the sugar kettle and two feet of solid packed leaves to muck out of the pond. It really inspired me to make a visible change in my environment through something that I enjoy.
What did you take away from the experience?
Honestly, what I most took away from the experience is that I’m stronger than I think. Spending up to four hours in the sun per day really proved that if I put my mind to it, I can accomplish more than I ever thought I could. It was such a great experience to be able to spend time outdoors doing work that I’m able to see the result of.
Thanks for giving your time and energy to make the campus more beautiful, Claire!
