Ocean Study

How long is a blue whale? On the last day of their ocean unit, PK4 students answered that question by measuring the length of a blue whale along the walkway outside of their classroom. They learned that blue whales can grow up to 100 feet long - about the length of three school buses! Once the measurement was made, the students used chalk to outline their blue whale. In the ocean unit, PK4 scholars learn the names of the oceans and the characteristics of fish. They use those characteristics to determine whether certain species are fish or not. They also explore the zones of the ocean and which animals live in each zone. In their study of bioluminescence, a favorite topic, they make jellyfish and anglerfish out of paper plates, paint their creations with glow-in-the-dark paint, and take them into a dark space to see them glow. Finally, they end with a study of the biggest animal on earth!
